Using PDPs to help your team perform
A Personal Development Plan (PDP) is part of a structured performance review and appraisal system that helps you track progress, support staff growth, and align personal goals with salon objectives.
Every team member should have a PDP in place - it’s a live document that guides ongoing development and ensures achievements and training needs don’t slip through the cracks.
Ideally, a full appraisal should take place at least once a year, with a mid-year review every six months to check in on progress, discuss goals, and adjust plans as needed. This rhythm keeps both the individual and the salon accountable for continuous improvement.
Why it matters
A PDP does more than tick a box - it’s a key part of building a motivated, high-performing team.
By encouraging open, structured discussions about strengths, challenges, and career ambitions, you’ll identify training needs early and show your team that their growth matters. This not only boosts engagement but also helps reduce turnover and keeps your salon ahead of the curve.
How to use it
- Prepare in advance - The team member should complete the first sections before the review: their current role, how they’re finding it, strengths, achievements, and any areas for development. This gives them space to reflect honestly without pressure.
- Review together - During the meeting, go through what’s been written and discuss any differences in perception. This should feel like a two-way conversation, not an interrogation.
- Set learning and career goals - Agree on realistic short-term and long-term objectives, identifying relevant courses, events, or podcasts that support growth.
- Create an action plan - Outline clear next steps, responsibilities, and timescales for review. Both the salon owner and the team member should sign and keep a copy.
- Follow up - Revisit the PDP every six months (at minimum), or after major milestones, to update progress and keep motivation high.
When to use it
Use the PDP during annual appraisals, mid-year reviews, or career development discussions. It’s also helpful after training, promotions, or introducing new treatments or services.
In short, any time you want to support someone’s professional growth and make sure learning and performance stay aligned with salon goals.
